Briggs power loss

I've noticed a lot of posts where owners of the Briggs 5hp outboard have complained of reduced power after the engine has been run for a few months. I have been running a Briggs since last July and I've noticed the same thing.

Has anyone found a cause for this? Aside from being slow mine seems to run just fine.

Re: Briggs power loss

I have not noticed a power loss on mine. I've been running it fairly regularly since last December.

Re: Briggs power loss

Some have reported problems with the rev limiter.
apparently there was a problem if they were
activated by an over rev.I understand there is a replacement.

Re: Briggs power loss

Ran mine all last year and this year changed oil and now use a synthetic. I get the same 11mph this year as last year pushing my Old Town 18' square stern with two people in it. I use the synthetic because I feel that it lets the engine run cooler and could possibly get better MPG, not important but having the engine run cooler I feel will prolong the life of the engine.

Re: Briggs power loss

Mine has lost power too, especially after I somehow aerated and spun the prop fast enough to hit the limiter. The unit was replaced, but it still doesn't get up to speed like it did. I can only manage 12.5 vs 15.5 when new.
