I always had old, used outboards and just bought a new one. It is a Briggs and Stratton 5hp 4 cyle outboard. They say it syupposed to be easy starting? I bought it about a month ago and it sat on the boat in the garage. Yesterday I filled it with oil (as recommended) filled the gas tank and added the fuel additive Pn 5401 (as recommended). According to the quick reference guide I took the following steps: attach the safety lanyard to the stop switch, attached fuel connector to engine, lossened air vent screw on gas tank, opened transport valve, squeezed primer bulb until firm, moved shift lever to neutral, pulled choke to choke psoition, twisted throttle to start position pulled starter handle slowly until resistance is felt/then pull rapidly, should then start? Well, I pulled and pulled and pulled and nothing? For brand new engines is there anything I should check? Is there any priming tro do with a new engine? It looks as if it is not getting any feul? But I don't know for sure? Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated?

Did you check for spark? Is the plug wet or dry.My first thought would be defective kill switch or improperly installed lanyard.
Choke defective or operated incorrectly.
Squirt a little gas into the carb.

You're sure you have the red transport valve (fuel cutoff valve) in the right position?

The lanyard is installed proerly and yes, the plug is dry. I think it also might be a defective kill switch? The engine is brand new and has never been started. I went step by step with the quick reference guide that was given to me.

Does the clear blue fuel line going to the carb have any fuel in it or just air? When you squeeze the bulb, you should see fuel in the line when the cutoff valve is open. Also, try opening up the throttle to near full throttle and try starting it. I found the one I had sometimes wouldn't start cold with the throttle at the "Start" position. It really should start.

Make sure you have the fuel line from the tank oriented correctly (I'm sure you have but...) Is this the newer style motor with the kill switch on the tiller?

I thank you gentlemen for all your responses and aid, but I really feel stupid on this one! When I attached the fuel connector to the engine, I put it on in reverse and that is why I wasn't getting any fuel. I looked at an old gas tank I had in the garage and it gave me the idea to look at my connection on the new engine. When I turned it around the dam thing just fired right up!

Re: Briggs and Stratton 5hp 4 cycle outboard

Hi Curveball,
I have a Briggs outboard and have had trouble starting it. I was told by the Briggs help people to make sure that the shift lever was in nuetral. I played with the nuetral switch adjustment located on the right side of the lower end behind an oblong rubber plug. This was their suggestion. The motor started after 2 pulls. When using the motor, I always try to move the shift lever to nuetral before turning off the motor. This way, I know that the motor is in nuetral. It has a very touchy nuetral switch. Hope this helps, it worked for me.

p.s. I don't know how the "imported" got in front of my name.
