That thing looks kind of familiar - maybe a little too familiar....

Hmmm! Thanks for the tip with bait the squid. I never thought of stringing that way.

Snapper, your not supposed to eat the bait, just the fish you catch with it. :D JTexas, you just ain't right. ;) Flyrod maybe you could share some of your live bait techniques.

Welcome aboard Key-z. Good to have another salterwater fisher aboard. :)

Ya know, there just isn't much to live baiting.
When trolling for stripers w/live mackerel you have to lip hook em or through the eyes. Stripers feed head 1st. When anchored up you hook that bait fish in front of the dorsal fin behind the head. When there is no live bait fish we chunk bait and chum with dead herring cutting the chunks in differant sizes so that the striper does not key on only one size.
When we rig whole dead baits we use round sinker with mono or wire leaders. It could be best explained if you go to www.baitmasters.com they rig there's basically the same way that we have done for years.

Flyrod,
How about a cod or halibut jig and teaser setup???
Do those work better than clam rigs??
I will be going out with the Yankee fleet on April 17
Rolmops

Re: Bridle-Rig a Squid

You shouldn't have much current on the 17th. a 16oz. jig should do it with a couple of teasers tainted with a little clam.
:p WARNING :p
:) "Before using my method use yours" :)
If you are going to use a hook and clam rig I would use a 20oz. sinker with a four foot leader, sinker on the bottom, two hooks spaced apart with your clam bait. You want that sinker to just hit the bottom.
If you lose your sinker I think that they charge you at least a buck a piece. So you might want to see what they cost in the bait shop that is on the premises.
As far as catching a halibut,I'll be some surprised if do.
:) :) GOOD LUCK!!!! ;) ;)

Bluefishing with live bait:
When rigging with live bait while trolling a tandom hook setup w/wire is required. 99% of the time using one hook you will get the top 1/3rd of the bait back.
Both hooks could be single hooks or the tailing hook could be a treble, which ever you prefer.
The lead hook I put through the nostrils, the tandom hook I hook just under the skin near the anal. Blue fish 99% of the time strike from behind.

NOTE: Some people use #100lb. test mono instead of wire.
