Updated: 7:42 p.m. ET March 21, 2005RED LAKE, Minn. - Eight people were killed and as many as 14 people were injured in shootings Monday at and near a Minnesota high school on an Indian reservation, authorities said.

Six of the confirmed dead were identified only by their status at school. One victim was a teacher, one was a security officer and four were students, said Paul McCabe, an FBI spokesman. We think one of those students was the shooter, McCabe said.

As McCabe spoke at the afternoon news conference, he received confirmation that two of the wounded a couple shot at a home before the high school shootings had died. Their identities and names of the other victims were not immediately known.

Many questions remained unanswered. It will take us throughout the night to put the whole picture together, he said. It's still a very fluid investigation. They're still clearing the school as a safety precaution, even though we believe the shooter is among the dead.

Red Lake High School, on the Red Lake Indian Reservation in far northern Minnesota, has about 300 students, according to its Web site.

Audrey Thayer, who lives in Bemidji and works as a researcher for the American Civil Liberties Unions Minnesota chapter, said the reservation was locked down by police with roadblocks. They have got it closed off, she said.

The reservation is about 240 miles north of the Twin Cities. It is home to the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians.
