I bought a new Yamaha XLT1200. The Manual said you have to use a full tank of gas (approximately 10 hours) to break in engine before going full throttle. At the dealership, I asked a Yamaha certified mechanic and a sales person how many hours I need to be gentle with new engine before I can go wild and both of them said 2 hours is enough. Who is right?

The manual.

Yamaha has to pay the warranty bill, not the dealer.

2 hours is not enough break in time for any engine.

The manual says the correct info. Follow the dealers advise and here is what happens when you have a engine problem that should be covered under warranty. Yamaha warranty adjuster looks at dealer supplied printout of engine history that is recorded in the ECU see you didn't do the correct breakin procedure Warrany claim denied. you say dealer told me I didn't need to Yamaha says sorry the manual is the reference to use not the salesman or Shop Tech. Saw this happen when I was working for a Marine shop. Rick

If I remember correctly, you must also add oil to your fuel on first tank also, basicly giving you double oil.

The manual is correct for the most part, although I don't know if it says anything about extended idling. I would avoid extended idling as well as avoiding full throttle. Vary your throttle settings and limit your passenger load to one or better yet no persons.
On my Sea Doo, I had to add oil to my first tank of gas for break in (on a two stroke engine).
After the first tank of gas is run through her, explore full throttle in increments before sustained full throttle applications.

As many of those engines I break in I can tell you my proceedure and its probably wrong, add extra oil first 15 min on the clock of the ski idle return and check plugs see what is going on in engine go another 15 min do same till 1 hour then replace plugs and go 2500 rpm 30 min go back check plugs go another 30 min and check plugs,im looking for grey on the plugs to warn of metal in combustion chamber like water leaking in just because its new means nothing to me. next hour 3500 rpm with short bursts of 5000 rpm to clean plugs.re check plugs next hour 5000 rpm, and short bursts every 15 min to wot. after that i avoid hard runs for a few more hours but run it around 5 k to 5500 keeps you from going nuts thats a lot of driving time for going slow just don't beat on it for the first 10 hours, the first hour is really important, I have torn them down with over 10 hours and still see the hone marks in the cyl walls so it takes time
