breakin question about double oil

I recently rebuilt my Evinrude XP150. I installed a new VRO pump and I have verified it is working. I just got past the 2nd hour breakin per the OMC manual and my boat has 2) 12 gallon tanks. I mixed 1 tank @ 50:1 for the break-in,.

My question is, like I said I am done with the 2nd hour, maybe even 30 minutes longer, but I am just about out of the pre-mix gas. At this point is it ok to go back to un-mixed gas in the tanks and just use the VRO? Or do I need pre-mix + VRO for the next 8 hours?

The manual just states pre-mix + VRO for 1st tank, but tanks vary in size.

The primary reason the manual says pre-mix is that you have to assure yourself that indeed the VRO is consuming oil during your first operations. No sense in destroying a powerhead because of a VRO oil feed problem. The second reason is the extra lubrication should help break-in (bearings and such). With the original cast pistons that was adequate. With your Wiseco forged pistons, they used to recommend a more precise break-in procedure, but they seem to have backed off some. I would go ahead and switch to straight fuel after your initial 12.

Generally double mix is to be used for the first 10 hours throughout the break-in period...I would not skimp at this point....My OMC Manual says: "During the first 10 hours of break-in operation you must use a 50:1 fuel/oil ratio in addition to the operation of the VRO2 Oil Injection System"

Re: breakin question about double oil

Well, I re-read and the clymers states 50:1 + VRO for break-in. And the OMC states 100:1 + VRO. I guess it does state to check oil level after 10 hours to verify oil is being used. Add oil, before switching from 100:1 fuel/oil to clear fuel.

I can't find anything from wiseco, all they told me was to do a special heat cylce break-in, then follow manual.

So I'm going to mix oil until my 10 hours is up, but do I follow OEM and do 100:1 or 50:1? What about slowly weening it to 100:1, then nothing?

Re: breakin question about double oil

Stay at 50:1 + VRO for 10 hours....No reason to wean it off unless oil cost is a big factor...This is out of my OMC Manual for my 91' rude:

That's interesting, I wonder if they changed their minds, if something is different on the VRO2's or what. Mine says 100:1, but everything else is the same for the most part..

Oil isn't expensive, just curious what's best for my motor and what's needed.
