I bought an 87 Larson with a seized 2.5. I wanted to see if I could free it up prior to removing it. There doesn’t seem to be a good way to get a wrench on it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Don

you pull the front pulley and use a crankshaft socket, or you pull the starter and pry on the flywheel teeth

or better yet, pull the drive, pull the motor (45 minute job), put the motor on an engine stand

Didn’t know there would be a 2.5 engine ever put in an 87 boat. Surely they would be long gone by 87.

We had a dealer putting 'new' Renault engines (the old 80 and 90hp) into boats he was building in the 80's... When MerCruiser where ending them he bought their entire stock for pennies and just used them up as needed...

Amazing Chris. Had no idea they were around late 80’s. Fair play. Always happy to be schooled by a man like yourself !
But more than that…Renault engines ! This is all news to me. What was the deal there. Had no idea about this. What were they based on ? Wee 1.8l 4 pots ?

Here you go. These are the old Renault engines. Used from 1965 to 1972 as 60(1.1L), 80(1.5L) and 90hp(1.6L).....

Brilliant chris. Had no idea about this. So we’re these branded with merc or marine maker for boats ? So didn’t know about this.
Being a European fella, and having had a few french motors, I would hazard a guess at these being based on the 1100/1200-1300/1400cc car engines that used to be found in small Renault cars.

No, they were 'MerCruiser' branded packages.
Have a close look at this picture and you can see the Mercruiser logo on the back half of the rocker cover...

That big crank handle is for tilting the drive.

Definitely looks like the old engines found in early 80’s and late 70’s cars. Peugeot used some of them too.
