Break in ?

I am near the end of my break in period on my rebuilt 98 115. After about 15 hours I am a little disappointed in the way she idles. I'm wondering if running double oil has any effect on idling? Here in Florida we have a bunch of manatee (idle speed) zones and after a day of running these zones she feels like she is misfiring every now and then. I hate to start making adjustments if this is a problem that will straighten itself out once I start running regular oil,

Re: Break in ?

Lets start with the basics. Which 98 115 do you have? The crossflow or the 60 degree looper?

How about the set up? Are you running oil injection plus 50:1 in the tank or 24:1 in the tank? What spark plugs? What grade fuel? What oil?

On double oil it may start to load up but it shouldnt be too bad. Naturally the idle time has a lot to do with it. Are all adjustments set as produced -- timing, jetting etc?

What kind of boat do you have? Does the motor sit rather low in the water when your at idle speed?

I know -- too many questions.

Re: Break in ?

It's a crossflow, mixing oil 24-1 in the tank, regular gas, I usually just buy whatever brand of Tw3 oil the gas station I fill up at carries. Just using the standard plugs recommended by my owners manual sorry don't have the info on that handy. It is on a 19' Welcraft cc and yes the motor sits quite low in the water.

Re: Break in ?

Sitting low in the water will cause a lot of backpressure and the motor cant breathe as well obviously. I might suggest a better oil like the Pennzoil Blend. You can get it at most X-marts for less than 10.00 a gallon.

The crossflows were good motors. That motor should idle great for long periods as long as its set up right.

With 15 hours you could probably start thinning down on oil. Whatever your engine builder recommends. Once you get to 50:1 it may do a lot better. Remember, use Champion plugs only.

Try the Pennzoil Blend. I think you'll be impressed. I accidently mixed 50 gallons once at 24:1 and my 150 crossflow didnt really act much different.
