Break in 460?

Have 1988 OMC 460 and at 28hrs break in time on motor (reman motor) and the Oil starting to look pretty dark. The reman company said to run 4 cycle motor oil for break in to 100hrs. My OEM book says 20hrs. then SAE 30 for my temp range. I went ahead and did oil change to SAE 30. Now my question is that when I had or did a break in on new motors those motors did not get so dirty (dark color) as quickly as this 460 did. Is it due to motor being a Marine motor and running under load all the time? compared to auto! I checked timing, plugs etc.. and everything looks good and motor is running like a champ! And last is it due to the non detergent 4 cycle motor oil?

Thanks
Paul

Re: Break in 460?

Paul,

if you're running Non-detergent motor oil and it's been 20 hrs, I would change it.

I don't think anyone runs Non-detergent motor oil any more even for breakin. (when I worked for an aviation FBO we used to do it but only for about 10 hrs or so...)

Put 15W40 or any 40wt or 30wt in it...

Cheers,

Rick
