Just wondering but does anyone have any information on replacing the cone clutch in a bravo3? I can't even find the part. If anyone has a link to the part and some directions on how to replace it I would be interested in seeing it. Just wondering though. Boat is the shop. The more I google around the issue that it was having the more I am starting to think it may have had a bad clutch.

I am dying to know what it is and I am dying even more to know if I will have to pay for something that is not right on a new boat that has 25 hours on it.

Well Don, you were right about the dangers of google. They took the drive apart, one of the gears that puts the boat in to gear has a tooth that broke off and caused damage to other gears, the spring on the cone clutch is all twisted up according to them. They are having a lead tech from Mercruiser come out to look at it and see what caused the damage. There dealer said there are no signed of impact damage and the gear looks a bit funky so they think it may have been a casting issue. The dealer won't know if its not covered until the merc guy looks at it.

As long as there is no signs of impact, Merc will cover it. I should say they should cover it. It's a new boat with no signs of damage.

Have had new boats in the shop before when I worked for a Merc and Volvo dealer and they never even sent a rep to look at it. Of course I was in Alaska at the time, and it was a long trip for the reps and usually cost them more than a new drive.

I am assuming the rep is only looking at it because it is in MD around Baltimore where there are a tonne of boats. Im sure it would be cheaper to have a rep there to look at claims then just approving all of them which sounds like what they do in rural areas. The only thing that may show damage is there is a quartar size chip out of the skeg behing the rear prop and the sked is missing about 1.5 inches of paint on the bottom where it drug through sand.

Well the merc guy came and looked at it. He took the drive apart further to see if there was impact damage don't know what he was looking for but he did not find any. He is sending his findings to merc for them to approve or deny the claim.

Sounds like they *should * cover it if they cannot find you at fault....

Re: Bravo3 cone clutch replacment

Well I got a call from the dealer. Merc is replacing the entire upper unit, drive shaft and all. They are sending out the new upper today. I am pretty happy. I think it was worth taking the boat back to the dealer I bought it from.

Re: Bravo3 cone clutch replacment

Just updating for anyone looking at this thread. First Don, thank you for the dope slap and pusing me in the direction of taking it to the dealer. If I took the drive off myself I would have never found the issue. The dealer did get a complete upper from Mercruiser including drive shaft. They replaced it and the boat is good to go. They even water tested it. I am very happy with Merc on this one and with the dealer, River Side Marine in Essix, MD. I lost my boat for less than two weeks and only one weekend. I will be on the bay this weekend.
