Shouldn't need to crimp lube bottle if you pull drive before draining. There will still be air in the drive unless its laid on its side with the vent up and finish filling
The shift linkage should move to out when drive starts to separate and stay that way until its ready to reinstall. If it doesn't move out then should remove the rear cap and find out why it didn't. Might need the detent assembly greased
