I have looked a bit and don't find an answer or even a similar question.
Can I install a fitting into the water pickup hose between the pump and the leg so run on the engine on a hose instead of using muffs on the leg. The reason is the muffs I have either dont fit well or the set that does has too small of hole for enough water to flow and they get sucked flat when I run the engine.

Or is there another way I am not thinking of?

Assuming your talking about the hose in the transom assembly and not the hose between transom and pump. If the hose is being sucked flat I would think the hose needs to be replaced because its gotten soft

Yes you can install a ball valve and Tee fitting between the transom and pump. One side of the Tee with have a garden hose fitting. Can also use the check ball fitting with a Tee

You can take the hose off the water pump inlet side and feed it water. If you do what you are thinking, low down…water will just run out the drive.

there is an adaptor kit available. Also keep in mind that if your muffs are getting sucked flat you could buy a better pair . . . or . . . maybe not enough water pressure from the hose?

You should be able to run at idle and maybe a fast idle 1200 RPM with the garden hose as a water source.
