Bravo 3 prop socket

Do I have to spend the $50 on the merc prop socket to remove the inner prop on a Bravo3 or is there something else that will work?

Nope, I use a pipe wrench and a block of wood.

3" Cresent wrench . . .

I have used a pipe wrench this past season, as I have not found a Cresent wrench that large locally. Probably still $50 at least. The pipe wrench was about $20, but the teeth on it tend to be a bit rough on the bronze nut, etc.

I would get the proper tool. You can use a torque wrench with it to torque the nut to the specified torque(100 ft-lbs).

I can tell you one thing, a Mercruiser service dealer doesn't use a pipe wrench. If he does, you need to find another shop.

Bearing in mind that the big front nut MSRP is $44.29 (11-859131) while the rear nut is $15.44 (11-862907).

OK I have to say it, bring on the negative....

Have been using the pipe wrench for a lot of years, a monkey wrench would be a bit better and so far with no problems. Have seen dealers use a large crescent or open end wrench to install the nut. I'm sure there are "better" dealers which will use the proper socket and torque wrench but as yet to see or hear one using it. (Caveat : I have not ever asked if the dealer if they use a torque wrench on a prop).

The nut is very large and after all the times I used the pipe wrench while there are marks, there has been no damage caused to which would cause me to worry about it holding.

Given the torque requirements and that m most self-locking nuts should not be used more then once.

Question: (Should probably start my own thread) Who hear has ever changed the inner or out nut and who has always used a torque wrench on those nuts? Who hear has ever replaced the inner nut from damage or over use?

I always use a torque wrench on the inner nut of my Volvo Duo Prop...but you probably already knew that! :)

Over the years, I have done a few here and there but not many. Mainly due to what felt like a failing nylock nut material.

The original nuts were difficult to R & R due to the nylock material used. It used to be work up a sweat out of breath by the time you were done and the hole time while turning the nut, you felt like the nut was going to seize up at any moment. Happily, they went to another type of material. Much easier to R & R now.

I will say, even if you are working on friends or friends of friends boats;) at some point, it would be better and easier to have the proper type of tool for this particular job to help avoid scarring up someone's $45.00 nut. And if you happen to run across the old nylock material, well there's no need to go to the gym that day.:faint2:

'here' not 'hear' . . . :)

IIRC, both inner and outer nuts are ny-lock style . . . so I just get them snug, but not torqued . . . I would imagine that at some point the ny-lock would tend to wear out warranting a replacement.
