Howdy,

Everything I read (from the manufacturer) indicates to use synthetic gear lubricant.

Some here use Mobil 1, Amsoil, Volvo Penta (syn), Royal Purple and of course Mercury High Performance Synthetic gear oil..... etc.

Just about any synthetic 75W-90 gear oil is fine. Only Mercury and Amsoil claim (10%) water contaminated performance and Amsoil actually posts some test info on their site.

I suspect that ALL gear oil will still perform satisfactorily with up to 10% water contamination.........Let also add...... to date, there is no marine (NMMA or ABYC) specification for gear oil.

If you do not want to use Mercury HP gear lubricant, choose any good synthetic 75W-90 (non-limited slip) type oil.

No one should use NON-synthetic gear lubricant in a Bravo.

Also, ensure that you change it at the end of the boating season, prior to winter layup.

Regards,

Rick

Re: bravo 2 gear oil ?

Two years ago i changed my outdrive at the end of the season so its done and ready for the new season. Went out about a mile and the boat kicked into neutral! After limping back in i did notice the outdrive shaking like it totaly wasnt in gear. Took the outdrive apart to check out the cone clutch and it all looked perfect! Old merc mechanic told me put it back together no problems with the outdrive? At the time west marine was out of the merc green/blue outdrive oil so i used the penzoil. Well it didnt work and the old merc mechanic was correct. So thats all i use know and its been a couple of years and all good.

And you're saying the brand of oil made the difference?
