I recently purchased a 2007 195LR Stingray Bowrider w/ a 4.3L Volvo Penta outdrive. I took the boat out onto the lake for the first time on Friday afternoon for the first 2 hr break in period. The boat ran incredibly well! However, every time I turned it off the engine seemed to run for several seconds before dying. I called the dealer (Chatlee), and he said that the boat was dieseling and that it should go away, but that they would check the ignition timing at the 20 hr service mark. The dealer also recommended allowing the engine to idle for a minute or so before turning it off. Still, allowing the boat to idle did not prevent the dieseling. I'm using 87 octane gas (regular). Is this normal for a new engine? Should this be any cause for concern? Is there any risk in running the boat for the remaining 18 hrs before having the oil changed? I'm looking forward to years of fun on this boat and don't want to cause any problems that might surface down the road. Thanks!

NO

Should this be any cause for concern?
Yes

Has nothing to do with the oil change, but diesling can suck water back into the engine, and that will DESTROY and engine in a hurry.

Is your engine idleing slow enough. It should be in the 650rpm range at idle.
If over 750 it will probably diesel.
I also assume this is a carbed engine ???????
Do you have the engine serial number handy by any chance?

It's the gas you're using. Be aware that your engine warranty does not cover damage from using 87 octane fuel. It specifcally states that in the manual. If you want to use 87 octane fuel, you need to retard your timing (or have the dealer do it)

Well, I stand corrected. I am surprised...assuming the compression ratio stayed the same (is is still 9.2:1?), what changed? Electronic systems to control the knock? Sorry for the misinformation and minor hijack but I am curious...

Thanks for the replies. The seriel number for the carbed engine is 3869358 4012217950 4.3 GL-G. The engine family is 7VPAM04.3GLO. The owners manual for 2007 recommends 87 octane fuel. I checked the idle and it is just above 650. I was planning on having the family out on the lake tonight...should I not do this? Thanks for the help again!

If it still diesels, might not be a bad idea to ground the coil wire, and spin it over several times to make sure no water got in the cylinders.

My thinking is that if you just bought a brand new boat, and it's doing ANYTHING is shouldn't be, take it back to the dealer and have them take care of it to your satisfaction.
