I just bought a 1970 Glastron 15' fishing boat ( mint condition ) with a 65hp outboard mercury sn:2603580..I have no idea what year the motor is ( would like to know ) well it sat all winter and when I took it out I noticed it wasn't spitting water very good so I changed the water pump. In the middle of me taking off the lower unit and changing the impeller and housing I noticed a quarter sized O-ring on the ground ( there was a replacement for it in the impeller kit but I have no idea where it goes now because I didn't see where it came from ....any ideas ? Thanks for help.

Re: Brand new to boats and have a question

Dave;

That s/n comes up as:

65 650 (R4) 4-cyl 2503991 2803561 1969 USA

From here:

Mercury 2-takt, 4-cyl, 40 - 85 hp, produktions?r, modellguide

Parts List:

MERC 650 - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

That O Ring may well be item 36 under GEAR HOUSING ASSEMBLY, COMPLETE (PAGE 1). It fits into a groove at the bottom of the splines at the top of item 7, driveshaft and is meant to keep the grease up in the spline area. If it is a very thick ring, it could be item 34 which is a slinger ring, designed to keep unburnt fuel/oil mix away from the top of the water pump.

If you scroll down the page to the item numbers and click on the photo, it will blow them up so you can see them better.

Re: Brand new to boats and have a question

Gerry,

Thank ya much sir ...that's where I thought the O-ring went by looking at it but didn't wanna risk it not knowing for sure and I looked up the sn: also and got 69 but it just looks so much newer then that I thought I was getting a wrong answer....1 more question do you happen to know the oil cap. And type of oil/where to get it? I watched some YouTube how to videos during this whole process and seen that if you get them with the pump and fitting it makes it a lot easier but when I called the local boat shop they didn't have any. Once again thanks for your help.

I was referring to the type and amount of oil for the lower unit/gear box

Re: Brand new to boats and have a question

Alright I've got my new water pump installed ...for the O-ring on and put the oil back into the gear box capacity was 21oz ....now I have a couple more questions ...1) where should the water be exiting from on this motor?? I'm not seeing a steady stream coming out anywhere ..I'm seeing water steadily trickle out of the vents in the lower unit and a little out of the exhaust also ...there are 2 holes above which is where I thought it was suppose to come out of but it's bone dry

2) Is there anyway I can check to see if the water is circulating through the motor like it is supposed to?
