Hi Folks,

Just joined the forum and am looking for some advice on a brand new Suzuki DF20A outboard.

Today I started my new outboard for the first time to find that no water was coming out of the tell-tale (pee hole). I read on a forum that it the engine might need to warm up before water would come out, so i ran it for 5 minutes on idle. Almost exactly at 5 minutes an alarm went off, and I shut down the motor immediately - no water had come out at all during the 5 minutes of run.

The engine was in a bucket of water up to the anti-cavitation plate the entire time. When i eventually put this on the boat, the engine will sit with the anti-caviation plate about 1 inch below the bottom of the boat (per the manual).

Any ideas on why no water is coming out? I am also not positive if the alarm was related.

Thanks,
Mike

Brand new, take it back where you got it and ask them to check it out

Run a little zip tie up thru the tell tale fitting and make sure there is not a mud dawber or other critter nest up there, especially if the motor has been sitting outside for any period of time.

Thanks for the responses.

I did a bit of research and found that this the motor had to be submerged further than just covering the water inlets - it need to be deep enough to reach the impeller. I opened up the impeller to check if it was still intact - it's alive, but a gasket ripped in the process, so i'll need to replace that.

Other than concerns over the impeller, is there anything else on the motor i should worry about?

I did a search Suzuki DF20 problems? very brief look around; factory blurb, user follow up and a video.

I would get another impeller, muffs that water goes in on each side of lower unit, better do a compression test now just in case something got bent, head gaskets ok.

If you would like to talk about, two stroke oil, gear oil, motor oil, ethanol, e-mail me .... tommarvin24@yahoo.com
