Follow the instructions in your Owner's Manual as though your life depended on it, BW. That's your best bet.

Good luck. :)

Go with JB follow the owners manual to the tee, one thing I like to do is a very early oil change. After the first couple of run times following the manual drain the oil and change the filter. For the cost of a few quarts of oil and a filter you will get all of the metal and junk out of the motor, the greatest ware on any new engine is in the first couple of runnings.

Keep a detailed log, It's easy to lose track of how many minutes, hours at what rpm. It's a Honda, most likely you won't have any problems but if you do the more detailed info you have as to problems starting, idle problems, smoke, shifting problems, anything out of the ordinary, write it down.

Beats workin,

I too have the 40 and its a great little engine!

The 10 hour break-in procedure is as follows:

First 15 minutes:
Run at trolling speed with as minimum amount
of throttle as necessary to maintain steerage.

Next 45 minutes:
Run up to 10-30% of throttle (2,000-3,000 rpm)

Next 60 minutes:
Run up to 50-80% of throttle (4,000-5,000 rpm)
with shorts bursts of full throttle only.

Next 8 hours:
Avoid continuous full throttle. Do not run
full throttle for more than 5 minutes at
a time.

For boats that plane easily, bring boat on plane then throttle back to specified break in rpm ranges.

It seems like an eternity the first hour or so, but it does go by fast after that.

Oh, and dont forget the first service which is at 20 hours or 1 month. That is when everything gets adjusted, tightened, etc once the motor is broken in. I prefer the dealer to do this one because it involves readjusting the valves and other "invasive" procedures.

Good Luck and enjoy :)

Nav

Make sure that deal includes a water separating fuel filter.

beats workin,

I'm with Hondon, I have a spin-on filter/h20 seperater on my boat with a 6 gallon portable and 40hp tiller steer. As much as these new outboards cost I think it's worth the trouble for a little extra insurance. The built in filter isn't much more than a screen. But that's my opinion.

I'll second this! My BF50 had metallic "glitter" in it's first oil change when viewed in sunlight. I've not seen it since.

Ditto on the water separating filter. Even though the gas is fresh, ya never know if it contains a bit of water and that is not good. Just extra insurance and cheap at that. Plus, if something happens and they find it was due to water damage from bad fuel or other source, it may void your warranty.
