Hello, my motor is still under warranty. I've only had it for just over a month and its never stopped smoking when I start it. Most of the time it stops in a matter of minutes, but sometimes it lasts a bit longer. I've even had it smoke occasionally when I have the water muffs on it and its been running for 2-3 minutes without smoke. I did all the break in procedures and chalked it up to being new, but now I'm a little concerned. Is this normal??? Oh yeah, the idle seems a little erratic out of water (seems faster than normal). The dealers said they did all the initial checks and everything was fine, but I want to check for myself. Does any know of a diagnostic tachometer suitable for marine use (due to increased vibration and noise from that of a car)?

You must remember that this motor is a 2 stroke & is designed to burn the oil after it has done its job lubricating the engine & therefore will smoke to some degree. This smoking will always be more pronounced when the engine is cold & combustion is incomplete, therefore I dont think you have anything to worry about, also, when a motor is cooling down the fuel in the residual fuel/oil mix evaporates leaving small oil deposits inside the motor which burns up next time the engine is started, adding to the smoke. And the reason for higher revs during flushing is because your outboard is tuned to idle with the exhaust immersed in about two feet of water creating back preassure on the exhaust port, When this back pressure is removed the motor runs free'er & therefore at higher revs. Hope this helps you to relax & just enjoy your yammy.
