I'm looking to add brakes to my boat trailer and decided to go with the brake and axel kit since the axel is old anyway and I believe it would cost me more to change the parts out a bit at a time.

It carries a 1970 15' Rinker Bow Rider (Tri-Hull).

What I would like to know is if electric brakes are good choices for boating. And if so, how do they work?

Any recommendations

Re: Brakes

Definatly go with surge brakes. The electric brakes opperate off of magnets that when activated by an electronic brake controller engage the brake pads/shoes with the drum. Not a good idea on boat trailers because there is no insulating compounds on the electrical portion whatsoever. If you want to know more about electric brakes try www.tekonsha.com they are the formost authority on electric brake systems in the industry.

Re: Brakes

Surge brakes are very far from perfect, and illegal in some states. I hate the slamming when starting from a stop.

I think the best brake solution (but probably the most expensive)is the electric-over-hydraulic.

In this new design, you install (disk OR drum) hydraulic brakes, but instead of a surge coupler, install a fixed coupler with a electric-actuated master cylinder.

Here's a link:

http://www.carlislebrake.com/hydrastarxl.pdf
