Brake/Wheel Question on Trailer

I was pulling my trailer out yesterday to put it in the water and as I was pulling the trailer out of storage the right back wheel appeared to be locked up. The left wheel was fine while the right wheel was digging into the ground as I was pulling it. I stopped the vehicle, put it in reverse and then forward and it has been fine ever since. I spoke to my mechanic and he said that rust might have locked the drum brake. I wanted a second opinion, this sound right?

Thanks,

Re: Brake/Wheel Question on Trailer

Sounds right BUT also sounds like it is time to clean and service the brakes. You probably have debris and rust inside them which "might" cause one to lock prematurely and prevent controlled stopping.

Re: Brake/Wheel Question on Trailer

Brake shoes/linings have a metallic content to them. When the trailer was backed into storage the brakes were apparently engaged. They sat during the storage period with the shoes in contact with the drum and rust began to form thus locking the wheel. Chances are there is no permanent damage and the drums will polish up with use however the intial wear on the shoes during this period will obviously shorten their life. Inspection is probably in order but not critical unless the wheel locks repeatedly. It could be a grease seal or fluid leak has contaminated the shoes which can lock the brakes.
