Re: brake controller

I have a electronic brake controller for an enclosed utility trailer that I have. Mine has two adjustemnts on it. I think one is for initial brake engagement, and the other is for brake pressure. I set mine each time I hook up. (I have two two vehicles, and each takes a different settign and they affaect the trailer so it changes with every pull.)

I drive slowly down my street and adjust the engagement setting so that the trailer does not jerk when brakes are applied at low speeds. Then I set the brake pressure setting so that it appears that the brakes are being applied with pressure about equal to the tow vehicle. (as close as I can get) You do not want the trailer stopping the whole rig on its own, but you also do not want it pushing you (hence the reason for the brakes.) I hope this helps.

Knightgang

Re: brake controller

Mine has a manual switch on a reostat which applys more brake the further the switch is pushed and a set switch for automatic brake pressure.

I usually set mine by parking on a slight grade and putting my truck in neutral. I then let the truck and trailer drift forward as I apply only enough trailer brake to hold the truck and trailer from moving.

I've learned the hard way by toasting a set of brakes on my camper while on vacation a few years back and ended up having to crawl down hills in low gear.

As you can tell, I usually set my controller light and then have the option to manually hit the trailer brakes independently if I find the weight pushing my truck down a hill a little to much.

Re: brake controller

thanks guys but i was told set the trailer brakes slightly greater than the tow vehicle...my controller has one wheel on the side to increase or decrease brake pressure...(can't remember name of controller, sorry!!) i was just wondering because it works fine but always has a "bump" after i stop and easy up off the brakes..is this due to the trailer stopping the vehicle??

thanks for your help so far...

trailer is actually a car hauler 7'x18' tandem with one axel brakes..but this is the best place i know for help!!! keep it up... :)
