I'm losing confidence in braided line. I've broken off more 20 lb Power Pro this year than I've ever broken mono. So far I've lost a crankbait, a popper, two spinnerbaits, some hooks, and a couple of fish. The crankbait was my fault, a zebra muscle came up on the line just in front of the lure and I thought, "I should re-tie the bait." But I got lazy, and the line looked OK. Next cast it was gone. The last one was a Texas rigged worm, a knot got into the line some how just above the bait, and it broke at the knot. The rest, I don’t know? I check my line pretty frequently for nicks and abrasion. I think this stuff just wears more quickly than I’m used to.

Re: Braid

I never go under 30lb....it will break pretty easy with a quick jerk of preasure or a pop.i break it alot when its real windy and the line loops around my top eye on the pole.when it starts fading i pull it off and put back on backwards.if ya find a better braid let me know i got to have it for some of the fishing i do nothing like knowing you can put all the preasure you got on a fish and pull it on threw, ive also found myself throwing in the nasty of places which i wouldnt even dreamed of with mono.also is it breaking or is your knot slipping?

Re: Braid

I've never broken my braid, I uses stren super braid. I don't uses higher then 20lbs. The only times I jerked and came back with nothing on the other end were because the knot slipped or it slipped out of the gap on the hook eyelet.

Re: Braid

After trying several braids, I have settled on 40# Power Pro. Don`t let the # numbers keep you from using heavier line. It`s just easier to handle, tie knots etc. I have never broken anything off and I use a uni knot to join a 20# Florcarbon leader to it. Polomar only to tie direct, but I seldom do. I only use it for my spinnerbait, jig and flippin rods. I also use the yellow line for visability and with the leader I see no change in the amount of bites.

Re: Braid

It's not slipping, definitely breaking. I have a spool of #30, maybe I'll strip the twenty off one of the reels and put that on. The new line I'm curious about trying is the Fireline Crystal. It won some kind of an award this year at one of the trade shows.

I've seen that Crystal, it's really stiff, I don't like the look of it.

Re: Braid

Don't even look at the Crystal. Ask your bait shop to tie an overhand knot in some of the lighter stuff and tie it off to something and give it a good jerk.

I agree with that. I moderate a fishing board that covers most waters in Eastern Pa/ NJ. The things I have picked up have been very useful. Helps shorten the learning curve. I enjoy sharing knowledge with other fisherman.

Now that I have your ear. A quick question. When rigging a crawbug, do you guys use a stand up jig head, or just a regular tube type head??

Re: Braid

Stand up jig heads and I've been Texas rigging. But I don't think I've gotten a bite on a rubber craw all year. I haven't used them a whole lot either though.

Re: Braid

One of the lakes I fish alot is rocky and holds tons of crawfish. Thats is why the tube bite is so good. I figure the crawbug might entice a few to bite this late in the year. I been using a 3/8th round head jig on em with limited success. I'll try the stand up head. Thanks 8)

Off work tomorrow for an archery hunt in the AM, and hoping to sore mouth a few bass later in the day when the sun gets way up there. Water temps are dropping and the bite is slow till later in the day. It'll be the craw bug, Deep diving suspending jerk baits, and silver Buddy's. Hope I get bit!

Re: Braid

I took the day off from work tomorrow to fish. I think this will be the last time out for the year. Got to put the boat away to make room in the driveway. Bummer.
