My Dad passed away almost 3 years ago and I brought all of his fishing gear home with me in boxes that I have never gone through, so I figured, today is a nice day and I will start going through it to see what he had.

But he fished the Columbia River a lot in Washington and I fish lakes and streams, some of this stuff he has is hugh! gigantic compared to what we use for the trout and jokes of salmon we have around here, some of the hooks he had in his fishing gear would be good fish gaff's around here!

Some of his poles and reels look like the stuff we used when I lived in Hawaii for ocean fishing!

I don't even know what to do with some of this stuff, most of it is brand new still in packages!

I would sure hate to throw things away..

Got any suggestions on how to dispose of stuff, I knew this was going to be a taxing situation, but now I am now a bit overwhelmed with what all he had, I know I was in the fog when he went, but working with a clear mind now..

I have a great idea what to do with it all, give it to me, I will pay 100% for shipping. If it were I and my father had anything to leave me fishing related I would make shadow boxes with the unique lures. Anything fishing related he has was given to him by me and I have taken when they moved into a home. I took my father fishing, to ball games, camping, to the car races, for lunch and, and, and. He found out I was playing pro ball by seeing it on TV. He could care less and came to 1 game because my Uncle from Kentucky who was my real Father figure made him and I miss him everyday. He brought us nowhere because they couldn't afford it. But every photo from the old days has copious amounts of booze of all types on the table. He's still alive going on 92. No love loss, and that's sad. Keep the stuff and look at it occasionally and thankfully.

edit: He left at half time and I scored 2 TD's in the second half. Maybe he saw that on TV too, he never said.

If any of it is display worthy (in terms of vintage type stuff) the Bass Pro Shops store in Springfield has some great museum space for that kinda' stuff. Don't know of any other fishing/outdoors type museums, but I really enjoyed looking at some of the stuff they had there.

I would check with some of the local fishing clubs, perhaps in the area your dad lived, to see if they can point you in the right direction

Fishing flea markets are big here in the Spring. Perhaps one of the local clubs have one as well

I would take some of it, mount it to a frame and build a display for the man cave or something on that order. Memories....

Hamilton Tiger Cats, CFL late 70's.The team Johnny Football is warming the bench for now. We all had jobs as the salaries then wouldn't pay the utility bills, a bit different today. Many were given a leave of absence during the season. Nothing like the NFL, not even close.

Sorry for your loss as well MT, and the hi-jack.

There isn't a day go by that I think about my Dad. I have been going every year (since '92) to trim the grass around his marker. Then we sit and talk.
We fished salt water only; couldn't and wouldn't use a R/R.(back lashed a open face; Zebco 606 rig he lost first cast). Used only a cane pole; always caught fish. My brother got all of his fishing stuff; there wasn't a lot.

I couldn't help but laugh a little. I was a bass fisherman all my life, and decided to give fly fishing for trout a whirl. When I bought my first fly, I was like " no seriously dude, I need a hook big enough to catch something larger than a tadpole...."

No kidding ... then trying to tie those things onto the tippet with my fat fingers  Still my favorite way to fish though.

MT - I really like what Old Ironmaker suggested. I learned to fish with my great grandfather and my dad. More so with dad, and almost all of my river experience came from him. I'd want a cool display around the house to mark those memories.

What is really odd about Dad having all of this stuff, is we didn't go fishing when I was growing up, he only started fishing after my Mom passed away, I know he had a couple of guys he would go fishing with for Salmon and Steelhead, but I didn't realize he got into this as much as the amount of stuff would indicate.

LOL

Tell me about it! First few times I'd go, I ticked off more than a few guys. I'd be waded out about waist deep and have to tie on a new fly. You'd hear me yelling " OH COME ON!! FOR PETE"S SAKE !!!!!" :mad-new: Then I found some +3.25 reading glasses and it was game on. haha

I have some antique lures from both of my grandfathers. They fished for muskies and walleyes in the great north woods of Wisconsin. Also a Neptune Mighty-Mite one of them bought new in the late 50's early 60's, it was in the original cardboard box with the owners manual like new until I let my brother store it for a while.

Gave up freshwater for saltwater fly fishing for that reason....you know you're going blind when you need +2.50 to tie #40 leaders....lol
