Just bought a 84 mod v side console with an 84 mercury 50 on it . Got it home and went to show my brother how the engine purr like a kitten , hooked the water muffs up turn the water on ( or so I thought ) and proceeded to turn the motor over . Turned it over , and it ran for about 3 secs , turned it over again and the same thing happened ... I continue to try and turn it over for about 15 sec and it wouldn't fire . Walked back to the motor and no water is goin to the muffs. I had hooked up the muffs to the wrong hose and didn't even check to make sure water was flowing . So I'm assuming I probably burned the impeller up , what do u guys think? I'm goin to check it when I get off work today , but my question is what else do I need to check?

With it being only running for 3 sec i doubt you did anything to it. But no matter what you should always check the impeller on a used motor. It is good to know everything is good before you take it on the lake.

Yes, the impeller was not affected by so short a run. You will want to replace it after you get the beast running. I would recommend you take a compression test, check for spark on all cylinders and reprot back. If the ign and compression are good, you could have a bad enrichener or idle circuit in the carbs.

Could be a lot worse, it's good practice to replace the impeller anyway, who knows when the previous owner did so.
