box on 1971 johnson 50 hp oozing

50else71 little box on the side of the power head with wires going in and out on the other side has a purpleish gooey substance coming outta it.. I have power to #2 cylinder but not to #1...I am thinking major $$ to fix . What does this box do and could a redneck by- pass it to make to motor run? any help would be apreciated

Hey Stomper...<br /><br />If that little box with the wires coming out of it is a silver color, it's yer power pack and ya gonna have to replace it.<br /><br />Part number 384986, 'round a $100 take or give.<br /><br />Jim

silver in color square 3 screws that hold the cover on...is it like a conection box or does it do other things?

Yea, it fires your cylinders at the correct time when the timer base assembly under the flywheel tells it to. Can't get "along" with out it.
