went and looked at the 56 johnson and it is in decent shape for 51 years old, better than me!i will repaint over the winter .started right up .1 question though ,on the pic of boatbuoy,s 56 javelin it has a crome front cover, mine has no flip up cover ,normal for the plain jane 30?also and pretty cool as far as im concerned it has a original adjustable pitch prop on it .should have fun over the winter .boatbuoy,i would be ever grateful if you would tell me exactly what you used for paint ,id like mine to end up looking as nice as yours minus the chrome of course.

Cougar,
Paint & decals can be had here: www.nymarine.ca
Is you adjustable prop the "Vari-Pitch" style? Kinda has a plastic knurled ring to adjust the pitch. If so, I have one here that is missing one blade. Yours for the cost of shipping if you want some spare blades...

Re: bought the 58 johnson.

Congratualtions. If it runs good then you just saved yourself $100 in parts.

The standard 30 hp didn't have a front cover. That's one less thing to worry about.

Shipping should be under $20. Probably not a bad deal considering those blades are probably hard to come by. I've never seen one of those props. Now I'll be on the lookout.

Re: bought the 58 johnson.

motor runs good thanks ,had all new points ,coils and cond, installed, fellow said he thought it needed new lower unit seals but i checked the oil and it is clear and free of shavings.i think he was mistaking the garbage you accumilate when running in a barrel as that problem.yeh the props kind of neat, can be adjusted to the type of boat which is great, just took a quick look at it and i think it went from 10 to 19 pitch.depending on how far i want to take it i could go from a lowerunit paint job, up to the full monty.have a beautiful pressure tank in the garage so there,s something else to ponder, and weather to go back to electric or just leave it pull start.also got the johnson ship-master controls with it.one other thing ,is boatbuoy,s 56 painted holiday bronze?

Re: bought the 58 johnson.

Holiday Bronze is what OMC called that colour. It changed to a slightly different shade every year (1956-1958). If you order from North York Marine you will need to quote the appropriate year.

Keep an eye on the lower unit oil for the first few outings.

I'd go back to electric start, but I'm a collector. Having an RDE without electric start would drive me nuts. Plus it's nice to just push a button and fire it up.

went and took a quick look at what was reported to be 2 1957 johnsons.they turned out to be 1961 40 hp johnsons.1 was a runner with electric start and the other was a good parts motor.would the elect start off the 40 work on the 30 from56?

Re: bought the 58 johnson.

I have no experience with those motors nor do I have the parts manual for the 1961 40 hp. I would expect that they would be the same, but I don't know. The choke solenoid would be different for sure since the 1961's would be 12V where yours is 6V. If your lucky the starter and choke solenoid will bolt right on - I'm never that lucky. Hopefully someone else will chime in.

Re: bought the 58 johnson.

also would i be correct in assuming a ratio of 24:1 for gas/oil mixture?have the same period pressure can in great condition ,will take a peek at it also,i suppose im getting in a big dither to play with it in a can just to smoke the neighborhood up lol.now for the next little part, what to use for a boat?????any suggestions?length ?material? im thinking 14 foot glass or 14 to 15 foot wood if i can find.there are several 25 to 35 hp 1950 johnsons around this area that i regualarry go to fish that are hanging off of wooden boats and they look very sharp.this motor will be a runner not a show piece in my garage.it wont be my main baby but for those days when i feel antiquie! lol.its run for 51 years so i see no reason it cant run for another 51 years.

You would be correct on the 24:1 fuel mix. As to the boat, that's entirely your choice.

I think they look best on the back of a wooden boat. 14-16' should do.

Re: bought the 58 johnson.

heres a serious option .http://www.newlondonfinearts.com/giesler.html theses are built in northern ontario canada and you can spot one a mile away and the prices are very good.imagine a bran new boat for the 30 for about 3 grand plus a couple of extra,s maybe 4 grand total.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Have you been to Giesler's website? Such beautiful and inexpensive boats. I'd like to take the short drive up there and check out the factory.

I love Peter Brubaker's boat with the twin 15 hp's.
