This Was a near give away I couldn't pass up. The motor wasn't running and I told the guy I could fix those carbs for about 150.00, but he'd rather sell it, so here I am with my 500.00 Sunbird, and the motor runs like a top.

It needed a rectifier to get the tach working, a set of wheel bearings and I'll be off to do a water test, then it'll be up for sale. It's a 91' boat and motor.

Nice find! Let us know how it does on the water!

I thought I was a lucky SOB with my $1800 92 Corsair 185 4.3 which basically needed a coil and new plugs ... but for $500, damn :)

Water test was a no go. The water pump quit right at the dock.

I know this engine was rebuilt two years ago, and no one I know would rebuild an engine without putting in a new water pump.

I dropped the lower unit and took off the water pump to find the impellor worn out, but absolutely no wear rings on the base plate or at the top plate. The housing in some areas was melted. This doesn't happen with normal use over several years, certainly not in only two years.

My experience as a marine tech tells me, you run an outboard without water and this is what will happen.

I got lucky in the fact that it quit at the dock. Poor judgement on my part to trust a used motor and not emidiately replace the pump.

New pump will be in on Monday, and we'll try it again.
