I just purchased a 1996 johnson commercial 9.9 outboard yesterday for $400, Was this a good deal? it ran good in the tanks so it seemed like a good purchase. My question is what should i do to the motor to make sure that it is ready for routine use? (it's been sitting for a year and was only used a couple times) Is this a reliable motor? What does the commercial part mean? The serial # is G03937169 .
thanks for the help

commercial means it is a heavy duty, change the impeller with a water pump kit. and check lower unit oil for water,. then give it a test run. if it ran good in the test tank, should be good to go. it was a great deal.

If the compression is good it was a good deal.

Re: Bought an johnson, know what?

Being a commercial motor it will look like

J10FPLEEA, J10RWLEEA, J10WMLEEA, J10WTLEEA or the like, depending on the shaft length and model suffix

The FP is "Commercial with program tilt" designation in the coding
RW is "Commercial with interlock"
WM is "Electric commercial with Manual Tilt"
WT is "Electric commercial with TNT"

Someone please correct me on the following statement, as Im not 100 percent that it all applies to this particular commercial outboard.

Also there are some differences that may impact your decision to use this as a recreational boat. It should have the normal VRO oil pump and the large 35 amp alternator-both good features. The standard commercial will have a different gear ratio, of 12:27, or it can have a large gearcase with a 15:28, depending on model. You will need to prop differently with these engines as well. That large gear ratio case takes 71 oz of oil, compared to the standard 33oz models. It takes different plugs, and there is no recommended constant high rpm plug. The engine is made to run on 75 octane, so the engines will be set and tagged with lower max timing settings on the airbox cover. It still makes 10 hp at 5000 rpm.

Re: Bought an johnson, know what?

Thanks for the info, i will check my model #. Is it good to have a commercial motor or bad. Heavy duty sounds good but all i really care about is reliablility. Nothing worse than fishing the flats and having your motor konk out a couple miles from the ramp. (The trolling motor will get me home eventually i guess)
thanks again

Re: Bought an johnson, know what?

just went out to check the motor and realized that maybe it isn't a commercial motor. The number is SE8PCP , is this commercial, is it really an 8 hp? The guy that sold it to me may have been misinformed. Anyone know how to decode the model # to make sure of the year and horsepower.

He said something about it being made in canada, not sure if that makes a difference or not.

Re: Bought an johnson, know what?

Any other suggestions on identifying this motor, am i right to assume it's a 8 hp, what is the year, if it is military surplus would it still use the same parts numbers as retail motors? Thanks for the help, i would like to buy a service manuel for the motor but want to make sure i get the right one.

Re: Bought an johnson, know what?

Check the model number again.
Leading S is for South America
Leading E for Evinrude
8 for 8 HP
RCP for commercial 8 HP - where RC means Rope Start Commercial with CD Ignition.

At the BRP Parts Catalog site, the 1995 8REOD models will likely be most like yours:

List of 8HP Commercial Model Numbers
Model Number Year
8RCV / 8RCLV 1994
8RCP / 8RCLP 1995
8RCH / 8RCLH 1996
8RCB / 8RCLB 1997
8RCT / 8RCLT 1998
8WREE / 8WRLEE 1999

Re: Bought an johnson, know what?

Okay so than SE8PCP should mean that this motor is from south america, it's an evinrude, it's 8 hp, and not sure about the PCP. Should this motor share parts with it's american counterparts. The guy i bought this motor from was way off on the motor, i wonder what year it really is? It originally came off a sailboat so i wonder if the picked up the motor down south.

Re: Bought an johnson, know what?

Just check that the first P in PCP is or is not an R.

There are "Electric Start Non- Tilting Sail" sailing motors that have "SE" in the model number, but that should be after the horsepower normally.
