Uh, yeah. Its a big deal. I wouldn't have bought it like that. sounds like the gears are worn and needs to be rebuilt. How much play does it have?

A little more info would help. My definition of a lot is probably different than your definition as id my definition of a big deal.

However, the prop shaft should have .010 end play. This is enough that you can actually feel it move in and out when you push and pull on it. Again, however, if the shaft is moving around 1/32 to 1/16 inch, that means that there is a shim either incorrect or missing.

There should be NO discernable side play in the prop shaft--that would --indicate at the least--a bad bearing in the carrier.

Oftentimes, the prop is set incorrectly on the shaft anf if the lower unit came with a prop. check for this first as movement of the prop on the shaft can be mistaken for end play.
