i recently sanded the bottom of my 1989 larson, the hull is in great shape. in some spots mostly the sides and bow i sanded all the way down to clean fiberglass, but others (about half the entire boat) i just sanded the first few coats of old paint just enough to prep for new paint. i know i cant barrior coat because not all of the paint was stripped, my question is if i just bottom coat it will the parts i completly cleaned be prone to water damage??? or will it be ok to just apply a few coats of bottom paint??? the boat will be in the water for probably 5 months out of the year, in freshwater, and often trailored out to goto other freshwater places. any advice is greatly appreciated thanks shawn

Re: bottom paint?????

I am not sure there is an definitive answer to your question. The bare spots of the hull can blister, if the gelcoat is not blister-resistant. Since the boat had A-F paint, it was obviously left in the water. When you sanded it, did you come across a grey primer under the bottom paint? If so, you should spot prime the bare spots with a barrior coat. if not, the gelcoat is likely blister resistant.

BTW - I like to prime under all A-F paint. It sticks a lot better. I do recommend it

Re: bottom paint?????

Thanks for the advicee! The boat is an 89 would that imply blister resistant hull? And its hard to tell what was underneath the af paint because the af paint was grey and the primer/barrier woulda been gray as well there was no difference once I got through first coat it was all consistantly the same, I'm just gonna hope for the best and prime it and put a few coats of bottom paint on I should be good.

My guess is the year of your boat, the gel coat is not blister resistant. My primer was interlux barrier coat which is white, so your primer could be any color depending on manufacture of BP. Buy enough barrier coat to do job right. This while help to prevent osmosis.
