I bought my boat last year and the previous owner painted right to the transom leaving no one inch space. what will happen? Do I need to fix? 1995 bayliner, merc 5.0, Alfa 1
Many, if not most, bottom paints suitable for fiberglass hulls can cause corrosion when very close or touching aluminum. What you are supposed to do is leave a 1 inch gap of unpainted fiberglass next to the the drive. The drive itself gets painted with a anti-fouling paint that is compatible with aluminum or other driveline metal. I have seen a few drives with paint that goes right up to the drive, with no apparant ill-effects, but I have no idea what paint was used. Think of the unpainted strip as a DMZ between drive and hull
Dont worry about it, my boat is painted right to the drive, been that way since 1992, moored in salt water for 6 months every year,no excess corrosion.
