My wife tried to post this question yesterday but left out all the details. My 1988 comp ski boat has a 5.7 liter (350ci)Mercrusier. Model is 5.7SKI. It has a standard Borg-Warner 10-17 Velvet Drive transmission. Do not have the serial #'s.
After doing battle with this issue for the entire summer and going thru parts on the engine I have decided my problem is the transmission. The engine starts and idles fine. If you rev it up in netural it is fine. Here is the odd part. Sometimes when I put in gear it will run fine but quite often when it's hot it will simply stall out. The transmission oil has always looked nice and clear but I checked it and it's black and nasty. I feel it's overheated for some reason. The oil cooler looks good inside but who knows. It acts like there is a huge overload on the engine like a rope wrapped around the prop shaft. Someone suggested that there can be a issue with the velvet drive trying to shift into forward and reverse at the same time. Has anyone heard of this?? This would make sense? How do you check it. Sounds like the selector valve leaking by? Any help out there. Thanks
Steve
