You asked over in DC
My son want's to shoot my .45 cal Kentucky rifle. What would be the load range for light to medium poop. I know I should use FF powder but forget what the charges should be.
Well I opened the safe to get my books and charts to scan in some articles for you.. now the darn scanner isnt working.. Arrrrg I hate puters.

Here goes the hand type

Note: Black Powder not Pyrodex

Recomended Black Powder Charges
.45 cal rifle
Ball dia = .440
Patch thickness = .012-.015
Powder charge starting 45 grain 2F - max 75 grain 2F

So I guess my off the cuff guess at 60 wasn't to far off.
But it's always better to check the manual.
Gee where have I heard that before around here ;)

If your son gets into range shooting he may want to replace the nipple with a "hot shot" that has a bigger opening for less fouling but still takes the NO 11 Percussion cap.

Here is a little information I thought you might like reading.

Black Powder Muzzleloaders / Range For Deer Hunting.
All smooth-bore muzzleloaders, shotguns of at least 20 gauge, muskets of at least 45 caliber, ammunition restricted to patched lead round-ball only, ignition system restrictions for this class none, sight restrictions for this class none, effective range 50-75 yards.

All rifled muzzleloaders (rifles), at least 45 caliber, ammunition restricted to patched lead round-ball only, ignition system restrictions for this class none, sight restrictions for this class none, effective range 100 yards.

All rifled muzzleloaders (rifles), at least 45 caliber, ammunition restricted to minimum diameter bullet no less than .440", ignition system restrictions for this class - no modern centerfire primer usage allowed, in-line percussion cap accepted, sight restrictions for this class none, effective range 150 yards.

All rifled muzzleloaders (rifles), at least 45 caliber, ammunition restricted to minimum diameter bullet no less than .440", ignition system restrictions for this class none, sight restrictions for this class none, effective range 200 + yards.

Black Powder Muzzleloading Rifle / Power.
While many people wonder just how powerful a muzzle loading rifle can be without the use of smokeless powder, others have been building, the ultimate muzzleloader.
Once you are allowed to use modern centerfire primers for powder ignition, there is very little to no difference in performance between muzzleloaders and modern centerfire high power rifles.

Ultimate Firearms, Inc. http://www.ultimatefirearms.com/ offers their powerful BP Xpress muzzleloading rifle that can be fired and burn 250 grains of pyrodex pellets. The rifle will fire a 300 grain bullet at over 2500 feet per second and a 180 grain bullet at 3100 feet per second. The Ultimate Muzzleloader has been subjected to just over 125,000 psi breech pressures. The rifle has a lugged, locking bolt with two blow by ports to prevent any primer blowback. Due to the patented ignition system, there are no gases expelled through the breech plug.

Just an added note - Keep it clean. Have all your cleaning supplies ready before you shoot. Clean the same day you shoot the gun. Just my habit but, blackpowder residue is corrosive to non-stainless guns and even those need to be cleaned fast.

You could also try Pyrodex Pellets. No pouring powder. Just drop in the pellets ( 50 grains per pellet ) needed to get the charge you want.

Love to use them in my '51 Navy's. Reduces reload time by half.

I know Cabelas sells them, but you may also want to check with your local gun shop.

Say that about 5 times more just to start! :)

Good points by all. Nothing wrong with pyrodex gents. My fishing/hunting partner used black powder one day, then switched to pyrodex, then when pyrodex pellets came out he switched to them.

Then he just quit shooting BP because it was just too much work!
Each to their own.

For me I enjoy the whole process.
My rifle's are sighted in using 2F commerical BP for target shooting and hunting.

But I like making my own BP then adjusting the load to make it shoot on mark. It is usually a mix between 3F and 1F.. every batch is different.

Melting the lard and soaking the cotton material then cutting out the patches.

Pouring (casting) my own balls. (no pun intended) ;)

For me switching to pyrodex (a smart thing to do for most people) well, I might as well pull out my 30-06 and say this is my upgraded muzzel loader!
Thats my story and Im sticking to it!

Off the record because my fishing partner well never read this.
And I plan to take this secert to my grave.

Back in the days when we were going to the range every weekend I filled up a empty can of 2F BP with pyrodex and adjusted my load from 75 to 68 grains! It shot spot on and every 4 to 5 shots I still swabbed out the barrel with a water patch like I was using real BP :D :D

I know ... mybad mybad ;)

Thanks Link. I ended up not taking the muzzleloader out to the mountain. I just now saw your post.

Went out with 9 college kids plus my son. 5 of em were girls. They all enjoyed it. Many had never shot anything before.

I supplied the following for them to shoot.

M1 Garrand
1903 Springfield
1917 Enfield 30-06
Savage Stevens Trench 12 guage
Remington pump .22
US 30 cal Carbine
30-30 Trapper Winchester Mod 94

2 Berreta early model 92
2 1911 Colt .45 autos
1 Detonics compact .45 auto
1 Colt woodsman .22 Target
1 Ruger single six .22
1 HK USP Compact .45
1 .357 Colt Python Revolver

Needless to say, we burned up a lot of ammo and I have one heck of a cleaning job ahead of me.

I guess I wouldn't have had much time to mess with a muzzleloader so I'll save your info for next time.

I also like the sound of the Pyrodex pellets. I'll have to look them up.

Re: Boomyal your Black Powder Question

Only thing about the pyrodex pellets is that they are expensive compared to the powdered pyrodex. And, you have only 3 loads 50,100, or 150.(if your rifle is rated for 150 grains of powder) But they are handi to load, just not worth the extra cash IMO.
Im gonna switch to pyrodex after the last of my can of black powder is gone. Pyrodex is alot cleaner, and besides, you cant hardly find black powder around these parts anymore.

I will be suprised if they don outlay us from buying the black powder befour its over. In my life they have had som bad explosions in the plants where they make the stuff. So any excuse for the atf to get an explosive of the market would suit them just fine. I used to be able to go to the hardware store and buy all the dynamite I needed, I doubt I could buy a stick , It having ben 20 years since I bought any.

heycods
Yes I think we all know what you mean. Good point.
IE: I grew up in a town where everyone left their rifles on the gun rack in the back window of the truck. And no-one locked the truck doors. My brother still lives there and not much has changed.
Boomyal
NP and it sounds like you had a great time.
That is a lot of guns! I'm scared! ;)

Two questions:
A: Where did you go into the mountains?
B: Did the kids enjoy it?

I only lock my house when gone for extended periods of time.

I dont take the guns out of my trucks, they are needed and used regularly, Mostly 22mgs. I dont lock my trucks. And I dont guess I have been anywhere ( other than across the border) without a gun in 40 years.
I guess that sounds strange to some, but here you are your own law inforcement, Nearest police would be 45 minutes out. Over the years I have had to protect my own several times, It usuall involves city folks that come to the country and figure they can go anywhere or do anything they wont to.

heycods
Sounds about the same where I grew up. Nearest law is 30 minutes away at break neck speeds and longer if you had to wake him up at night. :)
