I am wanting to get a spare tire and wheel for my "newer" trailer.I have been asked about the bolt pattern.I assumed that you measure from the center of 1 lug to the one next to it.The tire size is ST205/75D14 and the wheel has 5 bolts.I cant get the trailer or wheel to a dealer to match it up at the moment. What else can I do to determine which one I need.Local guy says he cant match it up without the bolt pattern.

Re: Bolt pattern for traILER WHEEL

Yours is very likely 5 x 4-1/2". Here's a longer answer to your short question. Bolt pattern means number of bolts. Yours is five. Bolt circle means the diameter of the circle that would be formed if you drew a circle that passed through the center of the of the bolt holes. To put all of this together, you usually say I want a wheel with a 5 holes on a 4-1/2 inch bolt circle or 5 x 4-1/2. So, if you measure carefully from the center of the spindle to the center of one of the bolt holes (thats the radius) and multiply by 2 you will have the diameter of the bolt circle. Most common is 5 x 4-1/2.

One way I learned was to measure from center of one stud skip the next then measure to center of third stud and add 1/4 inch.

Ayuh,...... Great Link Bob,..... It explains it Pretty Good......

Basically,.......
If you have a Trailer that has a Trailer Axle,+ Not something Home-made with an Auto Axle,......

There are Only 3 Options,..........
4 bolts in a 4" circle,.... aka, 4 on 4"
5 bolts in a 4 1/2" circle,..... aka. 5 on 4 1/2"
Or 8 bolts in a (I Believe) 6" circle......aka. an 8 bolt wheel.....

The other sizes are All Non-Common Trailer patterns...........
