bogging unless on plane

my 1984 merc 115 tower of power is acting even weirder than usual. it bogs when im trying to get on plane and sometimes even dies out, but once i get going, the thing runs like a dream. tons of mid and top power. it just takes me forever to get on plane because i have to sit there and work the throttle until i gain enough momentum to start moving. i have tried setting the fuel/air needles at every possible position and i get the same results every time. fuel lines and plugs are new. gas tank has no leaks. i had it out today and i sprayed carb cleaner into the carbs while my buddy was driving, and the low end power really started to come back. but once i stopped spraying and we let the boat idle around a little, the problem was right back. all help is appreciated.

Try pulling the carbs and clean the low speed jets/rebuild them. Also is your fuel pump providing enough fuel at low speed?

You identified your problem with the spray! Reddogg pointed you in the right direction. Coming out of the hole puts max strain on your engine and it needs all the gas it can get. Once up and running the load backs off and so does the requirement for combustion energy.

+1, my 50 hp Merc did that when it was running on 1 carb. Once on plane it ran OK because it had a lighter load.

I recently rebuilt my carbs and fuel pumps. I bought the kits online. Also a recomendation for you, install a clear glass fuel filter with replaceable elements (I got mine at wally world) in a horizontol position inside the engine cowling. This will give you a visual on how good your fuel pumps are working and it also lets you see how much crap is getting past your main fuel/water sepperator.

I replaced my fuel lines inside the covers with that yellowish Tygon fuel line, my lines Tee where the 2 carbs split off. My top carb had a stuck needle and I could tell by seeing the air bubbles in the fuel line which carb was bad. I bought one of those filters at Gander Mountain, its still on my workbench, need to get it installed. Fuel can never be too clean.
