skunks do hibernate, but they are easily awakened. the are called light sleepers, only hibernating during the most severe weather. must be sleeping tons during this winter!

They don't really hibernate, but will sleep for extended times when the weather is very cold...as soon as it gets milder, then they come out and wander around. Skunks are usually nocturnal, although in areas where they are used to humans they get very bold in the daylight.

They sleep long enough to wander out in front of my car only to be met with my rear wheels!<br /><br />DAMN I HATE SKUNKS! We have them bad around here.<br />I've noticed several this past week getting squashed and curling my nostrils.<br /><br />I was brought up to believe that all of God's creatures were here for a purpose. What possible purpose does a skunk serve?<br /><br />H.

Well darn near every critter in the state is hibernating....too dam cold!<br /><br />But on the brighter note....I gained a great cook since the skunk incident. This past X-mas I even made sure to give her a small stuffed skunk!<br /><br />HELP!!!! Send warm weather please!<br /><br />Bob

well, idid this post ,,as a 'kick-in-the-ribs' at BOB VT..<br /><br />see a skunk got into his girlfriends apt. made a real mess.. an beein' the 'knight-in-shiny-amour' & gentleman that he truly is... invited her in to live with him... ( until it passed )<br /><br />he don't want to admitt it.. but i say 'it was a-smelly-little-angel-from-heaven'. <br />the best thing that ever happend to 'em .. a great cook

crab bait,<br /><br />That is ONE CUTE STORY!<br /><br />and great cooks are a real find.<br />My wife (bless her heart) and good cooking, are contradictions. The best I can say for her cooking is that I'm finally adjusting to it. Burnt anything is her specialty. And yup, it does grow on a guy. It's gotten to the point that if it aint got that burnt/carbon flavor in it, it seems to be missing something.<br /><br />Good Luck and Best wishes to BOB VT

Bob_VT Whatever happened to the smell? Did you ever get it out?<br /><br />If you have ever hand to get close to an animal that has tangled with a skunk and have to live with it, the smell will never affect you as much. One vacation, two dogs got a little too curious. That yellow sticky fluid on them made you want to toss your cookies. It was our bad luck that it happened one night at the start of a holiday weekned. We washed the dogs that night and got some of the smell out, but it was not until a special call to the vets that next day that we were able to get a bottle of skunk out.<br />Like, an idiot, I had to get my nose close to the dog to smell it since we started getting used to it. Just then the dog moved and touched my nose. Now, I had the skunk smell on the tip of my nose. After that incident, the smell does not bother me as much. It still is a pain since a skunk sprays near our house once or twice a week in summer. Don't no why, but it sure will wake you up out a deep sleep.

Here are 4 solutions to use to get the stink out.<br />(1) <br />1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide<br />1/4 cup Baking Soda<br />1 teaspoon liquid soap <br /><br />Mix in a bucket (it will fizz).<br />Soak your dog's fur, but be careful not to get any in his eyes.<br />Use a sponge to clean off his head and around his eyes.<br />Knead solution into the fur and be sure to get every part of him with it. <br />Rinse thoroughly.<br /><br /> <br />(2) <br />1 cup of vinegar<br />1 cup hydrogen peroxide<br />1 cup of dish soap<br /><br />Lather WELL, add water until a good thick coat of lather is worked up and let sit for 10 minutes. <br /><br />Rinse well, followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar in 1 gallon of water to rinse and leave on.<br /><br /> <br />(3) <br />1 pint hydrogen peroxide<br />2/3 cup baking soda<br />1 tablespoon of citrus-based liquid soap<br /><br />Sponge mixture onto the dog's fur.<br /><br />Let sit two to five minutes then rinse with plain water.<br /><br />Second batch may be needed. Use fresh ingredients.<br /><br /> <br />(4) <br />2/3 water<br />1/3 organic apple cider <br /><br />Rinse the dog thoroughly, be careful of his eyes.<br />Learn these from all my camping years.

Yes, the smell still lingers as per people who live in the old building that was skunked. That liquid was actually absorbed into the 100 year old dried wood and plaster.<br /><br />Yes, Jenn is now living with me and still a fantastic partner and cook.<br /><br />The cookie winner.........privacy prohibits but they were delivered!<br /><br />Bob

When I was a kid our family dog had an encounter<br />with a skunk, We used tomato juice to wash the<br />smell from the dog. As well as I can remember it <br />worked great.

A cocktail of tomato juice and dawn dish soap worked ok, but Skunk out worked better. I hope I never have to try any of the other recipes.
