Well I will be getting the boat in the water next week, just a 16' trihull open bow. It's our first boat and we plan on going out whenever we get the chance. I have a 3yr old son that's potty trained. I've been wondering...what do we do when he's got to go? What have you done or do you do in this situation? I just know 5mins out he's gonna start doing the dance!

Howdy! You're limited for space, but a porta potty would work (just a matter of where to keep it when not in use.)
They're available right here on iboats.

It depends what kind of boat you have. A boy is simple....teach him to urinate in a bottle. :) If we are speaking of a larger boat...have you considered the small portable potties? Try camping isle. There are endless options. How about a bucket with a toilet seat attached to it. You may bring garbage bags to line the bucket. After each void, simply seal up the bag and leave it at the bottom of the bucket. I would recommend buying a bucket with a snap on lid. Good luck and enjoy. :)

Probably the same place that you are planning to 'go'. :noidea:

Do you have a place where you can store a porta-pottie on the boat?

i made a seat that went over the live well for a girl so they can sit with a blanket coving them and with the pump running its like a flushing toliet. boys tend to just pee over the back of the boat you just have to hold the back of the life jacket to stop them falling in and to help steer them in the right direction. Any thing more than that and i run back to the dock and use the one there.

boys pee over the side, or into a P-cup (a well-marked solo cup). Girls pee into a bucket and dump it. Older girls know how to hang over the ski ladder. Boys are taught at a young age to be gentlemen and to turn their heads. Police any mirrors and reflective surfaces.

No need for a porta potty (do you carry one backpacking?).

If you feel like you have to save it to dump on shore, I heard a great suggestion here once--put a disposable diaper in the bottom of the garbage bag to absorb and prevent leaks and spills.

I remember fishing with my dad when I was about six, in a 14' whaler; he told me to go over the side, I said the other boats might see, he said, "if they haven't seen it by now it's time they did."

P-cups are also a very smart safety device for men on larger boats fishing solo and/or in cold weather, or men who can't swim or climb back into a boat unassisted (most of them). Many drowning victims are found with open flies.

when I had an open bow I always just told my kids to jump in the water and go .......they would tell me they needed to go I would stop the boat and lower the swim ladder and away they went. Now I have a cabin cruiser so theres a working head.

Over the side! Last time I was in a hospital I asked for on of those snap lip urinals they give to patients to collect urine. They are great to keep on a boat. I bottle works too!

I have a wife and two girls. I have been toying with the idea of re-configuring the stern seat next to the motor housing to sit on top of a port-a-potty we have for camping. when not in use, you leave the cushion on the seat. When a toilet is needed, take the cushion off, and there is the port-a-potty. Of course this is only for "solid" emergencies. liquids go back into the water help to bring the lake levels up during summer!

Well I applied an appropriately sized PFD to my kids and then gave them the appropriate amount of vertical thrust over the side of the boat....

I'm having a hard time understanding why you need to ask this question.

Did you just get this son of yours? Has he not had to pee yet? :D

Re: Boating with a toddler..Where to potty?

We always have a kids training potty in the car. Since we seem to keep having babies we always have diapers in the car as well. In an emergency, (emergencies include disgusting rest stops!) the kids pee in the potty and a diaper is put in to absorb the liquid if I cannot dump it right away. We just got a boat so I have not done this on the water, but we have an emergency toilet seat that fits a 5 gallon bucket. This should work great, if a can find a place to store it!

Re: Boating with a toddler..Where to potty?

Great ideas! Boats only 16' so space is at a premium! If we have a cooler and tackle box with I really don't think we'd be able to carry a portapotty too, not to mention the price for one yikes. So I guess a bottle or hospital urinal like mason78 suggested would be the next best thing. No roscoe i didn't just get this son lol, just haven't been in a situation where there isn't somewhere for him to go. You gotta cut me some slack on this, like I said it's our first boat, I haven't really been on a boat much since I was a kid, I can remember alot of times being on boats just no memory of needing to relieve myself. Must've just not been a big deal. I was thinking having it all hang out over the side wouldn't be so accepted, boy was I wrong! He's gonna have a blast doing it, just have to teach him not to pee INTO the wind lol

The only thing that matters is that YOU are up wind.

3 year olds don't pee much, so you could probably use a ziplock sandwich bag. :)
