I suggest taking the USCG basic course, I did before I bought my boat and found it very helpful. It also covered national and state and local regulations. I wouldn't go out on the water in a power boat without insurance.

Besides regular insurance, I suggest towing insurance.

Check out the fwc website

Actually I was surfing the forum last night and saw a thread where fellow boaters mention some Insurance Companies and one popular was BoatUs.

I will keep looking into towing insurance but my main question is If I need a regular insurance like for my car for a boat as well?

At a minimum, you want liability insurance in case anyone gets hurt. Many boaters also carry comprehensive policies that also cover the boat itself. Just like with a used car, you want lots of liability insurance and whether or not you insure the used boat is up to you.

For a brand new boat, I definitely would want coverage for the boat itself as well as liability.

I use Progressive for the boat insurance, and Boat US for the towing insurance. I think I pay $160 per year unlimited for towing. the reason I do this - so I dont have to shell $1100 out of pocket to be reimbursed by Progressive at a later time. Tow Boat US and SeaTow both operate the towing services down here.

I have been towed in twice - once for a plugged heat exchanger and busted props, and once from a dead ignition module.

FYI. Progressive now has "sign and glide" coverage. No reimbursement wait. They pay toy company directly.
