I have a lot of family that lives in the NYC area and I am planning to visit them on Labor day weekend. One of my family members wants me to trailer my boat down from Rochester ~300mile drive. I have a 19ft Cuddy and I drive a SUV. I am wondering how good the boating is down in that area and is worth schelping my boat down? I am estimating it would be around $100-125 in added gas to bring it down there. They live NJ near the city.

Thanks,

Re: Boating in the Hudson?

Each spring I ran the Hudson fron NYC then thru the Erie barge canal. The Hudson around NYC is a mad house. Lots of local knowledge needed as it is also dangerous, even on a 65 footer. If you are putting in above the Tappanzeee Bridge the river is safer and more enjoyable. From Haverstraw Marina north is even better. Peekskill to West Point is also a good ride. Depends on your skills, excitement level, and what you are personally looking for. I have only done this a dozon times and there should be others that have a better knowledge.

There's great boating down here in our neck of the woods. Other than the trip around NYC and the Statue of Liberty you also have Sandy Hook and Raritan Bay just to the south that is great boating/fishing. Like the previous poster said the area around NYC can get pretty hectic..lots of ferry's , confused chop from all the big boats. If you do plan on doing the trip around the island I would not suggest on maxing out your person limit on the boat with all that family, you have to keep your wits about you when in all that traffic.

Sounds just like driving IN the city!

I grew up in NYC overlooking the Hudson. I also have some experience with a 20' runabout on a lake and on a 24' sailboat in the LI Sound. Personally, I would be intimidated. It is a major commercial shipping lane. It is a tidal estuary, so you need to be aware of the tide tables. It's about a mile in width (at the George Washinton Bridge) and the winds can be pretty significant.

The New York Harbor--Upper and Lower--and the Hudson north of the Tappan Zee are different animals. If you family member will be piloting his/her own boat, or has extensive experience on the Hudson, then maybe. But I'm not sure I would find it pleasurable as a newbie...

Amen!!!

I went around manhattan 3 times in my 23ft cuddy. Russian roulette is prolly safer!!! Awesome but Insane at the same time!!

running north past west point and up to Newburgh is awesome as well...
Newburgh has public docking with a bunch of places to eat and party for all ages. Sing Sing prison, indian point are good eyecatchers along the way.

One thing about the hudson... keep your eyes in front at all times!! There is always some tree or dock floating around!!
