Looking to take my boat out for the first time and I was wondering it would be better to go somewhere other than Percy Priest? Looking at either Center Hill or Tim's Ford. I'll have the family with me and looking for a lake that maybe isn't as crowded as Percy Priest.

Thoughts for those of you around the area?

Re: Boating in Middle TN?

Been ~ 20 years since I lived in Nashville,so I can Imagine the weekend bozo's have only gotten worse on Priest and Old Hickory.

My best advice is to get to the ramp before 10:00AM Saturday,and,11:00 am Sunday.
This is the lull between the fisherman, and, the watersports enthusiasts.
AVOID all coves with marinas in them,or,any area with a public park adjacent to it.
These areas will be whipped to a froth by the bozos,as they try to win a Darwin Award.

I used to hit the water ~ 4:30 PM on Friday evening, and make for the most remote island and camp.
Sunrise on Saturday found me heading for some "pocket waters",unknown/inaccessable to the majority of boaters/fisherman.:D
I returned on Sunday evening around sunset,Monday if a holiday.

Center Hill Lake is about an hour drive East of you,and it is a deep clear lake with lots of secluded coves.
Check it out sometime. It would make an excellent weekend trip.

Priest isn't too bad, I prefer to stay on the end away from the dam, 4 Corners/Hobson Pike area. The water is much nicer and no where near as busy. I hit priest pretty regular as it is the closet lake to me, but I really like Center Hill. Totally different animal. Much clearer water. I haven't tried it yet, but Dale Holow is supposed to be great as well as Normandy (smaller, about size of JPP), and Tims Ford. Don't forget you also have the Tennessee River in teh area (I grew up on it), and you have Old Hickory on the CumberlandEast of Nashville, and Lakes Cumberland and Barkley to the West.

Lots of Choices. Withina couple hours, you also have:

Smith (alabama)
Nickajack
Watts Bar
Loudon
Cumberland
Kentucky
etc....
