I have been using this BBS for tech advice on my boat. I just thought I would offer advice to anyone considering a move to Belize, Guatemala or Honduras. I live in Belize and have for almost 4 yrs. now and have traveled extensively throughout C.A.

If you have questions, email me at davidedgar@btl.net [/LIST]

The "Blue Hole" in waters of Belize is approx. 80km east of Belize City (where I live). It is part of what is called "Lighthouse Reef" and is actually a "sinkhole" about 300m wide and 135m deep. It has a "maze" of caves and caverns complete with stalactites and stalagmites.

Yes, I have been there several times. I am a P.A.D.I. Certified Master diver and have visited about 1/2 of all the dive sites off shore from Belize City. There are more to visit and explore. The reef is approx 180 mi. in length which makes it the longest in the Western Hemisphere.

Jacques Cousteau made films of diving the "Blue Hole" back in the 70's. It hasn't changed much. It is now a National Monument.

David,

Hello from Pensacola Florida. There is a boat up here named "Fantasy Island II" owned be a gentleman who retired to Belize. He runs a Bed and Breakfast down there.

I wish I could afford his boat Fantasy Island II, it is for sale. It is about 65' long. It's a steel hulled sloop with the tallest sloop rig I've ever seen. It is a strange boat. Flush deck with a small pilot house. I guess it was built this way to reduce windage.

I met the owner once when he was up here for medical attention. I don't remember his name, but he was fine gentleman, and got me thinking about going to belize one day, maybe for good. If I do get down there, I will do it on a bristle sailing craft.

Anyhoo, nice to hear from someone from someone down there.

Sailboats in Belize are very uncommon. The average water depth is only 6 feet inside the reef. The reef stretches for 180 miles or so. Most sailboats are catamarans. Most popular boats here are "skiffs" w/Yamaha outboards.

David,

What do you do down there? Is it everything that you dreamed about? Which country would you recommend the most for the purchase of real estate? Which location is the best for boating? My wife and I love Mexico and my father is from Bolivia so Latin culture is large part of my life.

Thanks

Mike

As for owning property in Central America or Mexico, it is only in Belize that a "foreiger" can own property or a business. All other countries restrict foreigners to "leasing" property. Bexcause of this, Belize was my choice for retirement. I now have built a business here, "Edgar's Mini Storage". It is the "1st & Only" Self Storage in the country. You can view my website: www.belizenet.com/storage for more info.

Re: Boating in Belize C. A.

my favorite fishing trip ever was a couple days in San Pedro Town out on Ambergis Caye in Belize, town motto: "No shirt, no shoes, no problem." Day one was deep sea fishing (only caught one sailfish), but day two was better. Fished the reef with a guide. Caught many species including a red snapper the size of my coffee table, but my favorites were the barracudas. Seems like we were the only fishermen there - everyone else was diving.

Hey Cap'n, You were lucky with that one sailfish caught. Wahoo, Snapper and Barracuda are in abundance here in Belize. There was a Sailfish Tournament here recently where only 1 sailfish was caught. That fish was worth $25,000.00! You better "BelizeIt"!
