Ayuh,.... 1985 was the last year for the stringer drives,.....

The hin should be cast into the transom, upper starboard side,....
The last 2 digits are the year,....

so, i just got done lifting the floor board to the gas tank, the gas tank is original to the boat . on the tank it says mfg date 04/1985. also looked on the trailer it also says 1985, and from what i can gather on my engine and outdrive, they are 1985 as well. so can i safely assume that the boat is a 1985 sunray. ? the stern drive has been painted from what i can tell of the paint being chipped off in some spots. the drive used to be white.

you have a 1984 OMC stringer 400. the 1981-1984 only came in one flavor

there were no 1985 stringers as the plant was torn apart for making cobras, just left over 1984's in a warehouse put into some 1985 boats

you need the factory manual. only legal place to buy them. https://outboardbooks.com/ or your local OMC dealer (if there are any left)

only place to get parts for your Obsolete drive is http://sterndrive.info/

Just for it having a Stringer, is good reason to put some distance between you and it.

Try finding a lower shift cable, or a factory shim pack. Good luck

If you have the time and know where to find parts it can be an economical boat.-----If you need the boat every weekend to get to an island it may not be the best choice.
