i have a 2007 caravelle 237 ls, with a 350 mercruise.

the boat goes into forward just fine

one out of every 10 times i try the motor will engage reverse.

i opened the back and watched the shifter cable as i tried reverse and it would move a little bit but not enough to go into reverse.

it would just move little bit then it would be like i am in neutral and the engine just revs up.

it moves alittle forward then goes back into neutral. it starts to engage then pops back into neutral with the throttle handle in reverse but it is in neutral on the motor.

do i need a new shifter cable or does my problem lie else where.

thank you.

Cable could be stretched. But I would see if can be adjusted first.

Bravo or Alpha drive? Sounds like the lower shift cable just needs to be adjusted, I'm not sure how to do that on an alpha, but on a bravo it's really easy, just put the shifter in neutral, ensure the drive is in neutral, remove the cable from the engine, spin the brass barrel around until it fits loosely and easily back into the holder it came out of, then re-attach the cable to the engine.
