I have a 2005 13 Foot Boston Whaler with a 40 hp Merc.

I had three people on my boat and it would not go past 3,000 RPMS - the boat was very slow.

I took the two people off and the boat would go a lot faster and hit 4500 RPMS.

I did not have this problem last year... What do you think it is?

I just put the boat in - do u think old gas would cause this?

Old gas, old plugs, clogged fuel filter... All these things can contribute to the symptoms you describe - in any engine.

Igot a 2005 40hp ,last year mine did that first time out for the season. Turned out the year before, put new plugs in while winterizing, one of the plugs had the porcylin around the center electroid broken. It would slide down and close the gap missfiring the cylinder. Changed the plugs, and it was fine. Think I might have broke it while gapping it. Anyway, check your plugs.
