My boat weighs about 2000 pounds, I need to replace the wench on my trailer.

I see there are several weight categories for winches, I am looking at using a strap and not a cable, the strap is rated to 3000 pounds depending on the size bolt used to hold the strap

Do I need to buy the one rated for 2000 plus pounds or can I get something less.

It appears to me that the type of winch for over 2000 pounds has different gearing to handle the weight

this is very confusing

Re: Boat winch-Wench

when i was shopping for mine i read somehwere that it was supposed to be rated for at least half the boat's weight. i figured why skimp on an important part... i went with one that was rated for higher than my boat weighs.

It is not like you a lifting the entire weight of the boat , get one that is rated for over 1/2 ( or more ) the weight of the boat, with gear , food , fish and fuel in it. iboats has a good selection in the storefront side of this forum.

You are correct about the gearin- 4:1, 6:1, 12:1 - More capacity, bigger ratio. More rugged build as you go up in capacity as well.;)
