boat wheel removal

Hello, I have never done this before and I need some pointers. I have a WC plastic 1980 boat wheel on my 1956 Old Town Wooden Boat and I am trying to change it to something more vintage. I removed the center plastic cap and then removed the 5/8 inch nut holding the wheel on the shaft. The wheel came off just fine. There is a sprocket that is on the threaded 5/8 inch bolt that has a key hole in it. The sprocket is about 2 inch diameter with a jagged perimeter that was made to fit the plastic wheel. I can't figure out how to get that sprocket off. I tried jamming a nail in the key hole but it does not release anything. Short of cutting the darn thing off I don't know how to take it off. I don't want to remove it like a redneck. Any suggestions? Dave

it's most likely a tapered shaft and would require a puller... and yeah pics

Re: boat wheel removal

Hello Guys, I also sent my problem to the AOMCI Forum. A guy told me to support the back of the sprocket with a crow bar , apply a little forward pressure and hit the drive bolt with a hammer. It popped right off. I was originally playing around with the key hole which I did not need to do. It ended up being a tapered shaft from 5/8 to 3/4. Problem solved. Thank You

well POOP I was gonna tell you to do that (that's how I do em) but you specifically said you DIDN'T want to do it redneck style.

You may look at rednecks a little differently now that you know you ARE one... LOL
