I was wondering if my motor is mounted to high or too low? I have heard too low will slow it getting out the holeshot and on plane. Its mounted to a 1994 Ranger Sport R70.
Any info would greatly appreciated.

Re: Boat very slow out of holeshot

It certainly doesn't look too low. It appears to be nearly as high as I run the engine on my Checkmate, and your boat doesn't have a jackplate. How's it drive once you get going?

edit: It was hard to tell from the photos that you've got a stepped transom. Seeing that, my guess is that you're in the ballpark on engine height.

As far as the slow acceleration - how many rpm's is it turning at WOT? What engine is on it? And what's the recommended WOT rpm range for your engine?

At WOT its running around 5400...Range is 3500-5500. once on plane it rides great but very hard to steer.

Once on plane are you trimming the motor up to relieve steering pressure w/o it porpoising? Make sure the motor is tucked all the way in when taking off....... When you raise the motor you may exceed recommended WOT rpms. You're very close to the max right now.

You're very close to the max right now.

That's a good thing. You want to be propped to be up near the max rpms at WOT, that will give you the best possible hole shot and also keep the engine from lugging.

SO - what we know so far is that apparently your prop is correct. It appears from the photos that your engine height is probably ok (but don't let that stop you from experimenting, you just might find a setting you like better).

A couple more questions: What size is your boat? Has it always been slow to get on plane or is this a recent occurrence? Also, what kind of speed are you seeing at WOT?

edit to add: What's the maximum HP your boat is rated for?

I've got two thoughts. Either you've got some water logged flotation foam and you're hauling around a lot more weight than you think, or else you're just a bit underpowered.

I just got the boat this year, and its always been slow to plane, than shoot forward once its settles. I am going to check it tomorrow and see if it still lugs after raising the engine a half inch. Its a 1994 Ranger 17 foot. Its max rating is 115hp. Its whats on the boat. I guess I could Run it across the scales and see what its weighing. Its possible its water logged. Though as of now...it doesnt hold any water.

Well I tested the boat out yesterday and its night and day now getting on plane. Very little trimming needed. Top speed and cruising speed comes on much quicker with less throttle needed for cruising, which is 25-30 mph. It even idles better and smoother.

Try a prop of same size that has holes in it for venting the prop on acceleration.

I had a engine that gave great results with the prop once on plane but pretty crap from take off.
I drilled 3 holes in the prop about 5/16th and the improvement was unbelievable.
I then went on to make the holes 7/16ths this was my best point.
My prop was an old alloy prop , but once this was done it was my best prop.
Other than that i had to drop an inch in pitch and still not as good as a drilled prop.

some say it dont work, well mine did and very well.
