We are looking at buying a 30' Carver Aft in the US. We live in Canada and want to know how we could truck this craft home seeing how it has a bridge. Seems to me it would be too high to transport -- any suggestions????? Please!!!!

Elizabeth:
Welcome to the site. As you become more familar with it, and this helpful forum I am sure you will be back often.
Now for your question, I'd at least start right here!
Go to the top right side of this page, and hit the tab for "Boating Directory".
There is an entire section on transporting boats, even some that give quotes.
I would not think you are the first to ever have done this, so there must be a way.
Either by land or sea....

Boats of this size are Disassembled for transport........
I'm also Guessing that it's Way Over 8'6" Wide as well.... It'll need Overwidth Permits for All the States in between.....
Your going to Need a Professional Boat Transport Company.........

Or,
Float it up the inter-coastal water way, Next Summer.........

Hey Liz,make sure you do your homework before you bring the boat to the border. With everything in order it took me 5 hours to get mine over, and just got all the paperwork for the trailer sorted out.13 feet 6 inches is the minimum clearance you will come across on any highway (unless otherwise posted).allowing 3 feet for the trailer thats still over 10 feet you have left.As Bondo pointed out width is probably over 8 feet 6 inches(beam).Considered oversize load.Make sure you shop around for rates if you use a comercial company.

good luck
Jim

Re: Boat Transportation

Isn't a special Canadian certification (Coast Guard) necessary for the boat also?

I agree on the professional transport company.

What was it that took so long at the boarder? Were you coming into Canada? We know you have to register 72 hrs in advance. Any other suggestions that may be some help as it looks like we may have to float it home.

Much appreciated

ElizaBeth

Elizabeth,
I was at the NY Boat Show yesterday and asked a guy in the booth for a transport company if they transport to Canada. He said no. According to him - it is much easier for Canadian companies to get permits in the US, than for a US company to get approved for Canada. Sounds like you might have better luck looking for a Canadian company. BTW - Those Carvers at the show looked great!

How much time would you give me to charter it for you via waterway next spring? <grin> I've no experience, but sure would enjoy the adventure. Heck, you could even come along!
