I just bought a boat with a trailer and the winch on the trailer has no handle. The trailer is a heavy tandem axle trailer, and the boat is about 1000 pounds dry. I don't think it is the original trailer, but no way to know for sure. The boat is a 1963 Texas Maid Electra cabin cruiser.
The winch has three shafts which all drive each other, and you can put the handle on any of the shafts to utilize a different gear ratio. The shafts have a collar with about a half-inch deep notch on each side of the collar which seems to be for the handle to index into. There is also a hole through each shaft which looks like it would accept a pin to hold the handle in place. On the opposite side of the winch there is a small drum with a strap and handle that would serve as a brake when letting the cable out.
Anybody ever seen one of these? I figure I'll need to fabricate a handle, but I'd like to have some idea of what the original looked like. It looks like a really good winch, but having the right kind of handle so that it can be easily switched from one shaft to the other will be the key to making it a pleasure to use.
Thanks!
